Beech 17 Staggerwing. Also used by the Army Air Corps, but definitely a civilian plane.

I love these. I've always wanted R/C version of one.

very pretty, love the way the supports swoop into the wing's design

The Guppy.

Most Awkward non-military plane?
May I present to you; the Aero Spacelines Super Guppy!
It's used by NASA to transport rocket parts, and other bits that are just too darn big to fit in any other cargo plane.

Anything by Antonov = Ugliest. Also cargo-iest.

The Diamond DA42 is a beautiful light twin.

Awkward: Transavia PL12 Airtruk

Lol, great minds think alike. It's definitely one of the most awkward planes I've ever seen.

is this the odd thing in Indiana Jones movie?
![]() 09/24/2013 at 16:07 |

eek, super solution sounds like a Nazi plan :P
visibility looks to be an issue :)

PZL Wilga is an awkward little polish STOL aircraft
The Aermacchi MC 72 is an absolutely gorgeous golden era race plane not many know about
I also love the Yak 54
and of course the all composite Sbach 300

Really anything by the Brothers Rutan.

interestingly enough, IIRC the float planes were faster than the non float variety until the geebee came about. I could be wrong, but I remember learning something about it in college.

Also, the one that takes the most balls to fly... The miniscule Cri Cri. Usually flown on 2 chain saw engines.

It's in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
Not sure about Indiana Jones - you're thinking of something in Crystal Skull? Haven't seen it.
![]() 09/24/2013 at 16:22 |

Yeah it somewhat pushed me towards loving it. I loved the thing so much when I was a kid that I did a spoken text about it in elementary school.

good thing its 2 chainsaw engines, incase one fails... BECAUSE ITS A CHAINSAW ENGINE POWERING A PLANE

hmm, nope, looks like I was thinking of the wrong thing, this is the one in Indiana Jones

Exactly.
I work for a model airplane company, and a UAV company (they go hand in hand) and we have had customers inquire about our engines for them. We are Leary to sell to them, but at the same time, its gotta be better than the little husqvarnas that are on there now.

First thing that came to my mind, the Dornier Do X. A Hudson steam ship wearing a hat made of wings and 6 double-prop push/pull power units. Gloriously awkward.

Love the Pond Racer:
And let's not forget the Freewing Scorpion:

I concur, Gloriously awkward.
something makes me think this is the only height a pilot would be comfortable flying this thing
